Window energy ratings are important for homeowners to be aware of when they’re considering replacing windows- as they tell our customers a lot about how their new window will perform, what features to expect, and how their new addition may impact their energy bills. Understanding window energy ratings is a great way to improve the environmental impact of your home, while also keeping your energy expenses to a minimum. This article will explain the basics of window energy ratings- helping you to always make an informed choice when considering replacement windows. Let’s get started!

What are Window Energy Ratings?

Put simply, window energy ratings (WER) are a measure of how efficient a window is at keeping heat in and out of a building. This is important information to have on hand when it comes to replacing your windows, as the more thermally efficient a window is, the more it can contribute to a cosy, comfortable home all year round. A window energy efficiency rating helps you to know whether your new window will keep your home cooler in summer and warmer in winter, preventing heat transfer from inside your home to outside, as well as the other way around!

The WER rating is calculated using the Total Solar Transmittance, U-Value and G-Value. The higher the rating, the more energy efficient the window is. We won’t go into the specifics here, but it’s important to note a few key things. The Total Solar Transmittance (TST) is a measure of how much heat is allowed to enter the building in question. The U-Value is how much heat is lost from the building through the window, giving us an understanding of how much thermal energy is escaping any building the window is installed in. The G-Value tells us about the glare effects on the glass of the window, which can cause sun damage, UV bleaching and a bunch of other harmful effects.

Why are Window Energy Ratings Important?

Windows energy ratings are important for homeowners to keep in mind when it comes to picking out a new window or set of windows for their homes. Window Energy Ratings give you an indication of how well your window will perform in a variety of situations. Window energy ratings are rated on a scale from A+, indicating the most efficient windows, all the way down to G, which are less efficient windows. This scale is pretty simple to understand- a lot of the number crunching has been done for us already. All we need to remember as homeowners is to check the window energy ratings of any window we are looking to install in our property, to check if it’s thermally efficient enough to be considered a good investment.

What other factors should I consider?

Window energy ratings aren’t everything when it comes to evaluating how any window will perform. Other factors, such as window orientation and building construction, are also important for calculating how energy efficient a window is. You can’t find out everything about how a window will perform in your home by looking at the window energy rating- you also need to consider how your building is constructed, the position of the window, and the direction of the sunrise and sunset relative to your home. For instance, a window facing west will lose more heat than a window facing north.

WER ratings are useful- they can be used to help choose the best windows for a particular building. With a higher rating, windows can be expected to be more efficient at keeping heat in or out, saving energy and money on utility bills. However, it is also important to consider other factors, such as building orientation and construction, in order to help maximise these energy savings.
